Although there are a couple of changes between the 2020 and 2017 versions, as a Scrum Master, I think the fundamental difference is reducing prescription and overall cleaner and more straightforward language. Over the years, the guidelines started to include some best practices and recommendations. We no longer have those included – and seeking more widespread Scrum adoption, the 2020 Scrum Guide does not reference IT projects and simplify the language. As a result, the 2020 Scrum Guide contains what is essential for Scrum to work.
Scrum has often described as “easy to start, but hard to master“. From my perspective, the recent change introduces more room for flexibility and innovation for Scrum Master. However, at first glance, it may seem that less straightforward guidelines could mean that Scrum’s implementation in teams may have got a little more complicated now. That is why I believe that it is essential not to limit myself to the Scrum Guide. For instance, I am actively looking for valuable books and training (including meetups and LinkedIn learning) to further grow as Scrum Master and an Agile professional.
