On November 18, 2020, Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland published an update of the Scrum Guide. Although there are a couple of changes in the Scrum Guide 2020, scrum still is scrum which means that Scrum is a Framework. The Scrum Guide gives just enough prescription to allow Scrum to run and allows the scrum team for adding on top of the framework practises and other items unique to them as appropriate to shape their process. The changes to the Scrum Guide are intended to explain what is and is not relevant about Scrum. The changes to the Scrum Guide are intended to explain what is and is not relevant about Scrum.
With the Scrum Guide’s 2020 release some elements and ideas have been changed but since they are no longer in the Scrum Guide, it does not mean that they should not be used anymore. One of the changes which I like, and I believe it was the right decision is removing the three questions for the Daily Scrum.
In the Scrum Guide 2017, the following question was presented as an example:
- What did I do yesterday that helped the Development Team meet the Sprint Goal?
- What will I do today to help the Development Team meet the Sprint Goal?
- Do I see any impediment that prevents me or the Development Team from meeting the Sprint Goal?
While the above questions are not based on tasks or encouraging status reports, it was something that very often caused this event to be boring and turned the Scrum Master into a Daily Stand-up Scrum Police.
On the other hand, the good improvement is the scrum team can choose the structure and techniques that suitable for daily stand-up. Based on the Scrum Guide 2020, “The Developers can select whatever structure and techniques they want, as long as their Daily Scrum focuses on progress toward the Sprint Goal and produces an actionable plan for the next day of work. This creates focus and improves self-management.”
I hope that reviews will be stimulated by the new Scrum Guide and that the updates will empower businesses to enhance their use of Scrum, address difficult issues, and produce more valuable results.
